A Book Club For Parents

July 21, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

parenting book club

Whether you are a parent of a newborn or about to launch your child into young adulthood, the parenting journey is always evolving. Joining a book club devoted to parenting is a fun way to connect with other parents going through the same challenges in trying to raise good humans. Each book gives the opportunity to dive into new parenting approaches and perspectives while sharing tips and tricks with other parents.

We want parents to enjoy the book club and not feel stressed about keeping up with the reading, so we are breaking each book down into three parts that are introduced monthly to give parents a chance to join the discussion without being pressured to read a full book every month. Each book club session will be facilitated by a trained therapist who is there to guide the discussion and to help take a deep dive into the content of each book.

Do you have to read each designated portion of the book for each session?
There are no expectations that parents complete each section to participate. All parents have busy lives which is why we divide each book over three-monthly meetings. You may still find it valuable to hear the discussion even if you don’t finish reading the designated section.

Can I still join if a book discission is already in process?
Of course! Jump in anytime.

Do I have to reach each book to be part of the group? What if the selection doesn’t apply to me?
Join us for the books you are interested in.

How do I sign up for the book club?
To receive the link for that month’s book club, select the registration button on our website.

Do I have to talk in the book club?
Participate as much as you feel comfortable.

The Self-Driven ChildFIRST BOOK:

The Self-Driven Child: The Science and Sense of Giving Your Kids More Control Over Their Lives

by William Stixrud, Ned Johnson

A few years ago, Bill Stixrud and Ned Johnson started noticing the same problem from different angles: Even high-performing kids were coming to them acutely stressed and lacking motivation. Many complained they had no control over their lives. Some stumbled in high school or hit college and unraveled. Bill is a clinical neuropsychologist who helps kids gripped by anxiety or struggling to learn. Ned is a motivational coach who runs an elite tutoring service. Together they discovered that the best antidote to stress is to give kids more of a sense of control over their lives. But this doesn’t mean giving up your authority as a parent. In this groundbreaking book, they reveal how you can actively help your child to sculpt a brain that is resilient, and ready to take on new challenges.

The Self-Driven Child offers a combination of cutting-edge brain science, the latest discoveries in behavioral therapy, and case studies drawn from the thousands of kids and teens Bill and Ned have helped over the years to teach you how to set your child on the real road to success. As parents, we can only drive our kids so far. At some point, they will have to take the wheel and map out their own path. But there is a lot you can do before then to help them tackle the road ahead with resilience and imagination.
