Frequently asked questions

What is confidentiality?

Confidentiality allows you to share your thoughts, feelings, and everything in between in a safe space where private information stays between you and your therapist. There are only three exceptions (that all therapists are required to follow from our code of ethics) to confidentiality: if there is an immediate threat of harm to self or other(s), suspicion of child or elder abuse, and in the case of a court subpoena.

Is there anything I have to do prior to my intake?

Before our first appointment can be confirmed you will be required to fill out initial paperwork online. This allows us to begin our work together when we have our first session rather than being tied up with completing paperwork!

How long will I be in therapy for?

The length of time an individual spends in therapy varies from person to person. Some clients feel relief after a couple of sessions, while others may remain in therapy for a year or more. Engaging in therapy is not necessarily a lifelong commitment. Ultimately, therapy ends when you feel ready.

How long is each session?

The average therapy session lasts for forty-five minutes. We also do provide 30 minute and/or 60+ minute sessions with adjusted rates.

How often will we meet?

Most people like to meet weekly, especially at first. Therapy is often the most effective with weekly sessions, as this allows consistency and dedication to your investment in making changes. Then as clients improve and grow, sessions usually taper to every other week. However, we understand that weekly sessions are not always possible for individuals for various reasons (not enough time, not in the budget, etc.) and can work on developing a plan on a case-by-case basis.

How long will it take to get an appointment?

We understand that when you decide you are ready for therapy, you want to start now. We work hard at Touchstone to match clients with clinicians as quickly as possible. The more flexible a client can be with the appointment time, the quicker we can get them to their first appointment.

What are your hours?

We are open six days a week, with evening and Saturday availability dependent on clinicians’ schedules.

Can you treat my child if they are at a preschool/daycare facility?

Yes, we can treat your child if they are enrolled in a nearby childcare facility.

Do I need a referral from my doctor?

A referral is only needed when your insurance company requires one.

What insurance plans are you in-network with?

We are in-network with most major insurance plans such as Aetna, BC/BS, Northshore, Humana, PHCS, TriCare, Unified Physicians, Psychealth, Meridian, and others. Please call our office to inquire.

Is there paperwork to fill out before the first session?

Our intake forms will be sent to you via email. We ask that these forms be completed prior to your first appointment.

What should I expect in my first session?

Counseling:

Many people feel nervous before their first appointment meeting a new clinician —that’s normal! Therapy is a shared journey. Clinicians at Touchstone collaborate with their clients to develop goals and what the journey make look like to achieve those goals.

PT/OT/SLP:

During your first session, your clinician will review goals for therapy, and your clinician may administer any testing or evaluations needed. Once the initial assessment is completed, your clinician will develop a treatment plan with you.

Is online therapy better than face-to-face therapy?

There is no difference in effectiveness for counseling whether therapy is online or in-person. It is more a personal preference for clients and what they feel most comfortable with. For children receiving counseling, PT, OT, or Speech, online treatment can be effective, but it is dependent on their ability to focus and participate through online platforms. Our therapists that provide online therapy for children have developed many skills and activities to achieve therapeutic gains in an engaging and playful way online. If you have any questions about online therapy, contact us at 847-996-6666 or info@touchstonetherapycenter.com.

Is online therapy private and confidential?

Different state therapy license boards have different ethics. However, all therapists are required to maintain confidentiality for their patients. All of our therapists will make sure confidentiality is maintained on their side. For examples of creating a safe space at home to participate in online therapy, please see our guidelines here.

Do you have a cancellation policy?

Since scheduling an appointment involves the reservation of time specifically for you, a minimum of 24 hours (1 day) notice is required for re-scheduling or canceling an appointment. If you know in advance that you will have a time conflict with a scheduled appointment, please let us know as soon as possible, and we will try to find another time to reschedule the appointment. If you do not cancel an appointment 24 hours in advance, you will be charged a $50 cancellation fee.
